The lives of the staff at a Manhattan diner intertwine. Pedro, the chef, is an undocumented Mexican immigrant who falls in love with waitress Julia, who reciprocates his feelings but does not want to commit to a relationship with a man who could be deported from the country at any moment. The situation becomes more complicated when Pedro is accused of theft.
